We all can draw and write! That was the message from today’s workshop. Although we all make travel journals, it’s always interesting to look at others. I showed the group a random selection of my travel journals and those of friends who have published their travel drawings.
I told my story of having a haemorrhaging benign brainstem tumour removed resulting in nerve damage, double vision, right side numbness and loss of fine motor movement in my right dominant hand. Consequently, art became my therapy and my left hand is now used for writing, sketching and painting. So my drawings are loose and wobbly. If I can draw, so can anyone! A few drawing exercises included drawing a cup, then drawing with the non dominant hand. Next was a blind contour drawing, then drawing with another implement. Photos of buildings from around Australia and the World were used as a reference to sketch. We then added a fictional story to our drawings – the When, Where, Who, What and Why.
It was great fun sharing our stories! I hope I have encouraged everyone to try something different and to realise that they can draw. It adds so much to a journal- it gives a sense of place.
